Steve Bathroom

"Rick tiled our Entry and our master shower. His attention to detail and, just as importantly, what we wanted, was well appreciated. He's not only a contractor ... he's an artisan in the best ways. I was afraid what I was asking was not practical because of the intricacy of the design and that we had a limited supply of the tile needed. He cut pieces to fill in and make it beautiful.

Thanks Rick for … well … “a job well” done seems grossly understated, but it was not only well done, but beautifully done!"

Steve Trageser

This walk-in shower presented some unique challenges for me, because the decorative band is made up of 5 different types of tiling: glass, slate, ceramic, porcelain, and travertine, all of which are different thicknesses.  Also, there are two soap cubbies and a seat not showing in this picture, and there was also a window I had to tile.

It was important to Steve to have the decorative band centered on the window, so I put the band in first, and then I worked my way down and up from there.

After you step out of the shower, 4-feet away is this tub that matches the shower in design and color.  There is a bullnose tile band around the top and a smaller version of the same design that you see in the shower.  Note the design does not change as it goes around the tub.

Despite common belief that your grout has to match your tile, this shower and tub combination is grouted in green, which helps in the earth tones and looks great!

Heidi Bathroom

"It doesn't look like the same bathroom after it was remodeled, so I'm hoping that these pictures would prove that it was, in fact, the very same bathroom. Rick moved everything. It was a true remodel!

Rick's pride of workmanship and experience not only allowed us to get the bathroom we dreamed of, but truly created a space more useable and enjoyable than we imagined."

-Ryan & Heidi Neider, Sugarhouse, UT
This was a complete bathroom remodel. They told me what they wanted.  I told them what was possible, what wasn't possible, and gave them ideas.

I started by masking off the room so that the dust wouldn't get all over the house.  Then I gutted the old bathroom, including removing extra and unnecessary walls, moved the plumbing and electrical to accommodate the new toilet, tub, and sink, which were moved to other parts of the bathroom to make it more functional.

I moved the vanity to where the tub was, moved the tub to where the toilet was, and moved the toilet between the tub and the vanity to allow more space and easier utilization of the space available.

I put in a new tub, tiled the tub base and shower surround with travertine, including tiling around the window and putting a cubby for the soaps in the space that used to be an inset medicine cabinet.

I installed a vinyl-framed window to not rot, where the last window was wood-framed. I also installed an exhaust fan to allow moisture to escape the bathroom to prevent mold problems.

Tiled the floor with travertine and put in a new vanity. The floor used to be covered with linoleum, and the floor was both out of level and wavy, so I made the floor level before I put the travertine in.

The new countertop is travertine and set on plywood and a beautiful wood vanity!

Barbara Kitchen

This tile design reflects the shape of the cabinets.  The floor has three different types and sizes of tile.  The field is 2-foot square tiles in a diamond pattern with green grout to match the green marble bordering between the porcelain and the ceramic tile.

This pattern goes around the 19'x43' room, around a fireplace, in a bay window area, in and out of two other rooms, and looks great! This floor was very uneven and I had to level it first, but the tile turned out very flat and is comfortable to walk on. It is also one of my favorite tile jobs!

Ron Exterior

This is an old farmhouse and had old, aluminum, single-paned windows.  I removed and replaced all of the aluminum windows in the whole house.

Ron designed this pop-out bay window a the end of his addition, and I built it for him.

Dot Bathroom

Dot has Multiple Sclerosis and has a live-in nurse to help her.  Her bathroom needed to be remodeled to fit her needs. Dot uses a wheelchair to get around, and there wasn't a lot of space in the bathroom with the tub in the way.

The nurses had to lift her out of her wheelchair and put her over the tub and into a shower chair, which was dangerous.  I removed the traditional tub and turned the whole bathroom into one big shower.  With the shower floor flush with bathroom floor, it accommodates her wheelchair nicely.  Now she just showers in a special wheelchair that can be rolled around in the bathroom.  She and her nurse love it!

I installed a long shower arm to bathe more conveniently.  I also installed grab bars and soap dishes in convenient places so Dot could shower as much on her own as possible.  Note the shower valve is where Dot wanted it to turn her shower hotter or colder.

Barbara Bathroom

Barbara had some space at the end of her laundry room, so we took out a closet and made room for a bathroom.

I filled in an old doorway, built a new wall and a new doorway for this bathroom, rewired the electrical and plumbing to accommodate a jacuzzi tub, a heater/light fan, and a plug at the new vanity.

By removing part of the wall at the back of the tub area, I created a space for future glass shelves for shampoos, etc..

I also had to jack hammer the floor out to tap into the main line for a toilet.  I put duct work in for the exhaust fan to exit through the roof.

Barbara wanted to have a deep jacuzzi tub. She didn't want the spout to be in the way of stepping into the tub, so we moved the spout to the far wall.

These tiles are porcelain and are made to go together as a set.  The pattern is an inverted pyramid, with three decorative tiles, then two decorative tiles, and one decorative tile at the bottom.

Barbara really likes chrome and brass combinations, which is reflected in her fixture colors.

Becky Basement

We have used Richard Merrick to finish our basement as well as to renovate our master bathroom and kitchen/laundry/half bath.  Rick pays attention to detail and makes sure that the job is done right.  You can be assured that everything will look fantastic when he is done because he wants it to be done right.  We have gone back to Rick time after time because he is a professional and can be trusted to give you a fair price and exceptional craftsmanship!

Becky had one bearing wall down the middle of the basement and some stair that came down to the basement.  She wanted more living space, and the boys needed a bedroom, so she only remodeled part of her basement, and we planned future electrical for her other bedroom to be completed at a later date.

The drop ceiling wasn't only to hide some plumbing, we added extra drop ceiling for design and to not look obvious that it was to cover plumbing.

The door in the picture is an exterior door to a storage room, so that drafts can't get out, and critters and children can't get in, to the food storage.

Becky had a leak in her toilet that caused rot in her floor. After I repaired the floor, I tiled the bathroom floor with some tile she got from a friend. She then matched the walls to the flooring.  The top border tile looks beautiful going entirely around the room!

She also decided to tile inside the window area with the same ceramic tile with pewter-colored grout.  Note that the cap tile design continues as it goes around the corners.  I take the time to cut the tiles at a 45-degree angle to get the pattern to stay fluid and beautiful.

Becky decided to go with a 1-ft square ceramic tile in her kitchen and bathroom (not shown) with gray grout.

Becky was great to work with and a good example in ways homeowners can save money.  *Her boys pulled out the linoleum and underlayment to save some money for her and give her boys an earning opportunity from her.  *Her husband took out the dishwasher, stove, and refrigerator in preparation. *After we discussed the material needs, I made her a list and she went out and bought all the materials and had them ready at her home before I showed up to start.  All these things allowed the job to get done faster and saved her money.

Becky wanted to do something with the wall above the counter top.  One of my suggestions was to have the wall over the countertop match the floor.  So, she decided to have me tile her backsplash.
